New York Construction accident deaths drop in 2009

Construction accidents fell in the city of New York, according to latest statistics, however the number of construction accidents and injuries is increasing in 2009.

The building boom that has dominated New York City in the last 10 years, was reduced, which has contributed to the decrease in the number of deaths construction. The decrease in mortality rate is the lowest rate in four years - only three deaths occurred in 2009 compared to 19 in 2008, a decrease 85 percent, 12 in 2007 and 18 in 2006.

Many have credited the drop on a review of security procedures, including increased vigilance and additional applications. Unfortunately, the number of reported incidents of construction increased in 2009 despite the decline in the number of new building permits. Reported accidents increased from 246 to 178.

More accurate reports of the contractors is credited for the jump in the number of construction accidents and injuries, according to the New York Department buildings.

Two of the deaths are the result of not using seat belts required. Seat belts are a vital necessity as reliable falls are the largest contributing factor for a construction accident. Further injury may be caused by trench collapses, exposure to toxic chemicals, excessive stress, and damage due to faulty equipment.

Because some construction-related injuries and deaths could be prevented by adhering to proper safety guidelines, many of those injured by an accident preventable choose to pursue a lawsuit to recover construction accident potential monetary damages.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reported that the highest number of fatal accidents occurred between construction workers from accidents on site.
