Photo Of The Day: 19/07/2011 "propeller"

Ludwig Franz Josef Ressel has passed into the annals of history as the creator of the first working prototype propeller to propel ships. Born in 1793 in Bohemia. His mother was of Czech origin and his father Germanic. He had to stop prematurely their studies, since after the death of his father, was responsible for the sustenance of the family. So I got a job as a ranger in Istria. This area is an important timber production managed that served to fill the then major shipbuilding port of Trieste. Later he worked on the river Krka, where his research concern led him to build his first prototype propeller riverboats. In 1827 he succeeded in obtaining a patent and gather the necessary support to test his invention in the Civetta steamboat. Despite getting the ship reached a speed of six knots, the experiment ended in failure, since the ship to explode. After the explosion, the continuity of his research was cut short, as the authorities forbade any further prototype. Desperate lack of support, Ressel decided to support the continuation of his explorations in a French technology that promised the necessary support to move forward and that, unfortunately, only got plagiarism and being involved in years of litigation and legal claims . There was throughout the century, various attempts to put in place similar devices, but they all ended up disappointing their creators.

It was not until 1839, when the Swede John Ericsson, perfecting propeller Ressel, managed to successfully complete the first transatlantic voyage.
